Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles, in 1985. The classic lineup as signed to Geffen Records in 1986 consisted of vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. Today, Axl Rose is the only remaining original member, in a lineup that comprises Use Your Illusion–era keyboardist Dizzy Reed, lead guitarists DJ Ashba and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Frank Ferrer, and keyboardist Chris Pitman. The band has released six studio albums to date, accumulating sales of more than 100 million records worldwide, including shipments of 45 million in the United States, making them one of the world's best-selling bands of all time. A year after its release, Guns N' Roses' debut album Appetite for Destruction (1987) reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, on the strength of the hit "Sweet Child o' Mine", their only single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album has sold in excess of 28 million copies worldwide, including 18 million units sold in the United States, making it the best-selling debut album of all time in the U.S. The success of their debut was followed by the eight-song album G N' R Lies (1988) which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The twin albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II (1991) debuted at No. 2 and No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and have sold a combined 35 million copies worldwide, including 14 million units sold in the United States alone. The cover album "The Spaghetti Incident?" (1993) was the band's last studio album to feature Slash and McKagan. In 2012, Guns N' Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Slash.
Slash:
Saul Hudson (born July 23, 1965), better known by his stage name Slash, is a British-American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the former lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During his later years with Guns N' Roses, Slash formed the side project Slash's Snakepit. He then co-founded the supergroup Velvet Revolver, which re-established him as a mainstream performer in the mid to late 2000s. Slash has received critical acclaim as a guitarist. Time named him runner-up on their list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009, while Rolling Stone placed him at No. 65 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" in 2011. Guitar World ranked his solo in "November Rain" No. 6 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos" in 2008, and Total Guitar placed his riff in "Sweet Child o' Mine" at No. 1 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Riffs" in 2004.

"Paradise City" was released in 1987 on their debut studio album Appetite for Destruction and was released as a single in 1988. It is also the only song on the album to feature a synthesizer. It is most known for its iconic lyrics, "Take me down to the Paradise City, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty." It is also frequently played at sports stadiums during games along with "Welcome to the Jungle", also from Appetite for Destruction. The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's third single to reach the Top 10 in the U.S, and number six on the UK Singles Chart. lead guitarist, Slash, states that the song was written in the back of a rental van as they were on their way back from playing a gig in San Francisco with the band Rock N Riders. He says that the band was in the back of the van, drinking and playing acoustic guitars, when he came up with the intro. Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin started playing along. Slash started humming a melody when Axl Rose sang, "Take me down to the Paradise City." Slash chimed in with "Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty." Axl sang the first line again, where Slash shouted out "Where the girls are fat and they've got big titties." Axl finished with "Take ... me ... home!" Slash preferred his second line but the rest of the band felt differently. He was outvoted and they used the first line. The band then expanded upon the rest of the lyrics in rounds. Finally Slash wrapped up by coming up with the heavy riff that drives the song. During a 1988 interview, Rose told "Hit Parader" magazine that "the verses are more about being in the jungle; the chorus is like being back in the Midwest or somewhere." This song was often used as the band's show-closing song during the Appetite for Destruction Tour, Use Your Illusion Tour and Chinese Democracy Tour. It was also ranked #21 on VH1's 40 Greatest Metal Songs of All Time, #3 in "Total Guitar" magazine's list of the 100 greatest solos of all time, and has won various similar awards over the years. It ranked #453 on Rolling Stones's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Lyrics

"Paradise City"

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home
(Oh, won't you please take me home?)

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home
(Oh, won't you please take me home?)

Just an urchin livin' under the street
I'm a hard case that's tough to beat
I'm your charity case, so buy me somethin' to eat
I'll pay you at another time, take it to the end of the line

Rags to riches or so they say
You gotta keep pushin' for the fortune and fame
You know it's, it's all a gamble when it's just a game
You treat it like a capitol crime, everybody' doin' their time

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home? Yeah, yeah

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

Strapped in the chair of the city's gas chamber
Why I'm here, I can't quite remember
The surgeon general says it's hazardous to breathe
I'd have another cigarette but I can't see
Tell me that you're gonna believe

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home, yeah, yeah

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home? Yeah

So far away, so far away
So far away, so far away

Captain America's been torn apart
Now he's a court jester with a broken heart
He said turn me around and take me back to the start
I must be losing my mind, are you blind? I've seen it all a million times

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home, yeah, yeah

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home?

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home, yeah, yeah

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home, home?

I want to go, I want to know
Oh, won't you please take me home?
I want to see, oh, look at me
Oh, won't you please take me home?

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Take me home

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home?

Take me down, oh yeah, beat me down
Oh, won't you please take me home?
I want to see, oh, look at me
Oh, won't you please take me home?

I want to see, boy, I'm gonna be mean
Oh, oh take me home

Take me down to the paradise city
Where the grass is green
And the girls are pretty
Oh, won't you please take me home?

I want to go, I want to know
Oh, won't you please take me home, baby
