The Artist FRANK PETERSON
Frank Peterson was born on the 20th of December in 1963 in Geesthacht a Hamburg suburb. He was taught music theory and piano playing since he was four. He learnt to play synthesizer and guitar - as acoustic as electric in the young age. But he has never had a classical training, so he always had to learn everything himself. Then he picked up arranging and sound engineering.
In the early 80's Frank applied for a job in Hamburg store that sells music studio equipment. There he began working on his first demo recordings. Soon he got to know Michael Cretu and showed him his demo tapes. Michael liked them so much that he invited Peterson to Munich for cooperative work at Data-Alpha-Studio. Frank agreed and became a keyboarder in Sandra's band - Arabesque ex-vocalist, who had just begun her solo career. He was often credited as Frank Peter at that time.
He got his first recognition in 1985 when Maria Magdalena sung by Sandra went number one in charts. He continued his playing in Sandra's band, while he started writing music for other famous singers, whose songs were on top. In 1989 Cretu got married with Sandra, and they with their band, including Peterson moved to Ibiza Island (Spain).
On Ibiza Frank and Michael began working at a brand new project. The first result was the single - Sadeness Part I that united the medieval mystique and modern rhythms, religiousness and sexuality. It went popular on the radio and took the top chart positions. That means that the public was ready to accept the project with intrigues title of Enigma, which is secret and riddle in Latin. It was also interesting that Sadeness was prohibited in some Catholic countries - it was said to abuse feelings of followers. The single success (that was even scandalous) surprised its creators, so Cretu and Peterson continued the work on the debut Enigma album. For making it more mysterious and wishing to be incognito they made up the nicknames - Frank was F.Gregorian and Michael was Curly M.C. The title of the album was the year of its creation - 1990 written in Latin numerals - MCMCXC a.D. It's worth mentioning that The Voice & The Snake was solely written by Frank. This track is inspired by a part of Bible - Apocalypse. It was one of the most dark and terrifying songs in the album. The album became platinum and gold in many countries just some months after. Some times later there were many Enigma clones, they are usually united in the Enigmatic genre.
Frank left Ibiza in 1991 and moved to Hamburg: he decided to become a music producer. The formal reason of leaving Ibiza was impossibility of working at other projects. He decided to start his career from scratch.
Frank met Tomas Schwarz - a talented keyboarder - at his vacation in Spain and they began making a creative team. Soon, Tomas invites Matthias Meissner - a virtuous keyboarder who dealt with him in 1988 for a cooperative work. These three composer and a musician as well as Frank's wife Susana Espelleta and their assistant Michael Wehr comprises a powerful creative team. Their first collaborative album - Sadisfaction was inspired by the debut album of Enigma, for instance it also used sampled Gregorian chant.
Frank's nickname (Gregorian) was used as the project title that is associated with Gregorian chants. They are originating from VII-IX centuries. Liturgical songs of occidental Christian churches came from Syria and Palestine and soon got widespread in Western Europe. The word of 'Gregorian' is related to Pope Gregory I who put the monks' songs in the collection.
Sadisfaction was obviously similar to Enigma, but had the more commercial purpose (however, the Gregorian album was merely successful). The vocal parties were performed by Sisters of Oz and had a more pop oriented sound than further Enigma. Then Once In A Lifetime single was released that became a style standard of Nemo Studio, it was sung by Sarah Brightman (in Dive album) and two times by Princessa (Spanish version for Princessa album and English version for I Won't Forget You album). Other single - So Sad had a direct connection to famous Sadeness (even titles are alike), but was made in less dark tones. One more interesting fact is that the tile of the album - Sadisfaction (not Satisfaction) was written with a deliberate mistake. This method was used by Peterson in Sadeness (not Sadness!). In the former and latter letters game is intended - it should remind the name of Marquise de Sade who was famous for his scandalous erotic novels of the late XVIII.
For the next eight years Frank Peterson produced Sarah Brightman and Ofra Haza. During this time there was no release by the name of Gregorian. Frank considered that the market was oversaturated with Enigmatic music, but in 1999 he decided to make a brand new project with the familiar title - Gregorian.
Masters Of Chant - The Dark Side
The Album
I learnt about The Dark Side at EnigmaMusic forums just about a week after it got released. There were no reviews just a link to www.gregorian.de and the track-listing that looked scaring for some people, they saw such titles as Unbeliever, Ave Satani, The End and got really frightened and decided to give up on Gregorian, I think they missed a lot, although I suppose they wouldn't like it since they complained about such dark titles.
Anyway, I went to a music store and bought the CD, on my walking home I was thinking how I would come have my meal, turn off the light and would be listening to The Dark Side laying in my bed (it was evening). I expected an ambient kind of music; Ave Satani seemed to be something like Gravity Of Love by Enigma. I was slightly wrong...
So, I switched off the light, inserted the CD and pressed the play button.
The Songs
Hurt
Sound was coming and becoming loud, a dark melody something like layered piano and guitar was saying: 'Don't expect anything funny and happy'. Then, a strict slightly loud and bit scaring voice appeared. It was Hurt by Nine Inch Nail.
My Immortal
If you happen to listen to modern 'hits' radio, then I guess you recognise this songs that was often played a year ago. I hope Evanescence will forgive me for my thinking that Gregorian did it better ( sure, there wouldn't be the Gregorian version of My Immortal but for Evanescence). Even my friend who didn't know anything about Gregorian didn't believe his ears when he heard it for the first time, he asked me if Gregorian was first to write this song.
The Four Horsemen
The leading horse is white, second horse is black…' and a one minute long guitar-drum solo at the end. A very dynamic song. Well done
Unbeliever
A marvelous piano melody that goes through the whole song. An unforgettable songs that is written by Gregorian producers - Michael Soltau.
Where The Wild Rosed Grow
I must admit that I didn't hear the original version of this song by Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue, but something told me that this one should have a female vocal. My strange feeling was right. A very beautiful song that makes you sing: 'She was more beautiful woman...'.
Close My Eyes Forever
'So beautiful' - I said when I heard the first chords of this song. Dark and romantic.
More
Loud drums, distorted guitars, a strong female vocal. A powerful song.
Uninvited
A song that seems calm and a just a bit boring at the beginning and then says: 'No, I'm worth listening to'.
The Raven
When I heard it for the first time, I had only heard instumental compositions by The Alan Parsons Project, but at the middle of the songs I said 'Damn, this is Alan Parsons!', I looked up in the credits and made sure that I was right.
Gregorian Anthem
Calm and slow at the first, but soon a heavier sound appears making you want to run across you room. Then, the misterious Latin whispers appears and it transists to... Ave Satani.
Ave Satani
Oh yeah, that scaring title. Very noisy sound, wonderful 'Ave Versus Christus' verse. Some people say that is a unmelodic song, but in fact there's a melody, just noisy a bit, athough they thing so, I strongly believe they can compose soemthing similar to it.
In The Shadows (Bonus)
The fact that it's a bonus song probably means that it wasn't planned along as others songs and there were no place for it in the album. Personally, I don't like it very very much.
In conclusion, this is indeed a great album, it doesn't sound like the previous ones, by the way, do you remember what Frank Peterson said in the MOC IV booklet? And it might seem unpleasant for some people, although such people just looked at the track-listing and didn't even give it a listen. Yes, it's dark, but it's romantic and beautiful at the same time. So, I highly recommend it!

Masters Of Chant - Chapter I
If you read Frank Peterson's (producer and founder of Gregorian) biography, then you know that he recorded the Gregorian first album - Sadisfaction - in 1991. Soon he realized that people didn't like his creation, so he put off his idea of blending pop-music and Gregorian chants and moreover this niche was already occupied by Enigma. In 90's he was producing such artists as Princessa, Sarah Brightman, PeCh, Ofra Hasa and many others. By the end of 90's people got used to Gregorian chants in New-Age and pop-music, so Peterson decided to bring his idea back but in a new style. Obviously Frank risked a lot because nobody knew how people would react to such hits playing.
In 1998 Frank Peterson with his team re-started the work at Gregorian project. His idea is singing the famous songs of different genres in the Gregorian style. The idea wasn't new, since the release of Sadisfaction there were many similar bands. They often recorded only one album and then disappear. Obviously Frank took a lot of risk because nobody knew how people would respond to this way of singing the hits.
Peterson selected twelve songs that became word hits from 60's to 90's. They are rock ballads and pop songs. Before releasing the record they had a very hard work at adapting the music. The first problem was that Gregorian chants are sung in Latin without music, but not in English. Then there was a problem in song selection because they had to convert 12-tone music to the Gregorian one with only 7 tones.
Then the compositions were re-arragned. They had to give a new life and fresh sound to well-known songs. They removed intros from some songs and modified instrumental solos in others ones. All the arrangements were made in Nemo Studio in Hamburg with using of their awesome synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines
Then, they had to find vocalists for a choir. Frank hired singers himself who were famous session singers in England and sung in major church choirs or universities, like Academy of Saint Martin, Royal Musical College, Royal Cambridge College, Royal Northern Musical School and Musical College of Saint Trinity. They choir members were Philip Conway, Thomas Barnard, Jeremy Birchall, Andrew Busher, Mark Bradbury, Timothy Holmes, Roger Langford, Gregory Moore, David Porter Thomas è Christopher Tickner. Other members joined for a tour - Michael Dore, John Langly and Alex Mack. They sung in the best cathedrals of - London, Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sauthgemptone and Edinburgh. Frank was looking for singers who didn't only have a good vocal but who were also open to new ideas.
Choir recording was held in Nemo Studio. In the same time they wrote interludes for smooth transitions between songs. In order to achieve good sound Frank Peterson rented an old English church that had been re-build for a recording studio, so the choir sang in familiar conditions with the only exclusion that they listened the recorded music in headphones. Considering that the studio atmosphere was a bit cold because there were many equipment and singers wouldn't be in a proper mood Peterson ordered to light two hundred candles.
It took a year to record the first album of the new Peterson's project. A lot of money was spent, but that was worth it. Frank Peterson showed the Gregorian chant in a new style and gave a new like to well-known compositions. The main idea was to mix two things that seemed incompatible - medieval chants and modern music. It took a lot of efforts and time, but the result was great, we got a brand new project that got major recognition soon.
The Masters Of Chant album was released at the end of 1999 and went top in charts in many countries. It had more than a million copies sold and it became platinum and gold in Germany, Norway, Belgium, Australia and many other countries. The album had a great success, so Gregorian decided to make a tour across Europe that started in the February of 2000. All the surroundings, the appearance of the musicians should put people in a proper mood. The concerts took place in churches with 2000 listeners inside. They achieved a great atmosphere; some people even thought that they were real monks
The successful tour attracted people to the album and Edel - the company that published Gregorian - released a new version of Masters Of Chants in the October 2000 with two new tracks - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2) and Save A Prayer (Duran Duran). At the beginning of 2001 they made a video album Masters Of Chant In Santiago De Compostela that was released at DVD and VHS. They filmed 10 video clips for it in a small town in the Northern part of Spain Santiago De Compostela where the body of Saint Jacob (Christ disciple) was kept.
