Plot :

Dr. Ryan Stone is a biomedical engineer aboard the NASA space shuttle Explorer for her first space mission, STS-157. Veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski is commanding his final mission. During a spacewalk to service the Hubble Space Telescope and Stone's upgrades to the Telescope, Mission Control in Houston warns the team about a Russian missile strike on a defunct satellite, which has inadvertently caused a chain reaction forming a cloud of debris in space. Mission Control orders that the mission be aborted and the shuttle begin re-entry immediately because the debris is speeding towards the telescope. Communication with Mission Control is lost shortly thereafter.

High-speed debris from the Russian satellite strikes the Explorer and Hubble, detaching Stone from the shuttle and leaving her tumbling through space. Kowalski, using a manned maneuvering unit (MMU), recovers Stone and they return to the Explorer. They discover that it has suffered catastrophic damage and the rest of the crew is dead. They use the MMU to reach the International Space Station (ISS), which is in orbit about 1,450 km (900 mi) away. Kowalski estimates they have 90 minutes before...

Trama :

La dottoressa Ryan Stone è un'esperta ingegnere biomedico che affronta per la prima volta una missione nello spazio, la fittizia STS-157. Assieme a lei sullo Space Shuttle Explorer l'astronauta Matt Kowalsky, il comandante, in quella che sarà la sua ultima missione prima di andare in pensione, e Shariff, un giovane astronauta. Durante una passeggiata all'esterno dello Shuttle per alcuni lavori di manutenzione sul telescopio spaziale Hubble, vengono avvertiti dal Controllo Missione di Houston riguardo ad un missile russo che ha colpito un satellite ormai in disuso e la conseguente esplosione ha causato una reazione a catena che ha distrutto altri satelliti e quindi creato un'onda di detriti che si muovono ad altissima velocità. Mentre l'equipaggio inizia in tutta fretta il processo di ritorno nell'Explorer per rientrare il prima possibile, i detriti colpiscono e danneggiano molto gravemente sia lo Shuttle che il telescopio e uccidono Shariff e gli altri membri dell'equipaggio rimasti sulla navetta, lasciando i due da soli alla deriva nello spazio, senza comunicazioni con la base di Houston dato che anche i satelliti che garantivano i ponti radio sono stati danneggiati...
