However, the attack proves to be damaging for the Union as it suffers heavy losses. Shaw is wounded and loses consciousness. He is awakened by a black Union gravedigger named John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), only to discover the battle still raging on nearby, and is sent to a field hospital. While receiving medical attention, Shaw is told that President Lincoln is on the verge of passing the Emancipation Proclamation, which will free slaves in the South. While on leave in Boston, Shaw visits his family, and his father has Shaw meet Frederick Douglass. Shaw is offered a promotion to the rank of Colonel, and command of the first all-black regiment – the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He accepts the responsibility, and asks his childhood friend, Major Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), to be his second-in-command.
