One of Robert Schumann's aphoristic dialogues reads:

"Two different readings of the same work are often equally good. E(usebius).

The original one is generally the better. Raro"

If one takes Ormandy's "original" 1956 recording of Glière's Third Symphony as opposed to the later 1971 reading ... well, it has long seemed to me that the Schumann exchange above reveals some of what is going on with the two recorded versions of Glière's masterwork.

Simply worded: Ormandy's 1956 recording of Glière's Third Symphony has something the later version lacks (as "good" as later version may be). ONLY: the later version is in S-T-E-R-E-O. Hypnotized by illusionistic realism in sound, we can sometimes miss the music (or, the lack of it, as the case may be).

When the magic of stereo appeared, a huge amount of monophonic recorded music became instantly inaudible, dropping completely out of sight and sound ... and this situation continues largely unchanged to this day. It's one of the main reasons I upload much of what I upload - and this offering is no exception.
