Vanaf haar jeugd wist Melinda Gordon(Jennifer Love Hewitt) dat ze doden kon zien en met ze kan praten. Aardgebonden geesten die nog niet zijn overgegaan. Deze geesten vragen de hulp van Melinda om boodschappen door te geven omdat ze door hun plotselinge dood niet voldoende afscheid hebben kunnen nemen. Geesten vragen op de voor Melinda slechte tijdstippen haar hulp. Zeker nu ze verhuisd en getrouwd is met Jim Clancy(David Conrad). Ook heeft ze een antiekwinkel waarmee ze druk is. Andrea Moreno (Aisha Tyler), Melinda's zakenpartner in de antiek winkel en vriendin, is erg gefascineerd door Melinda's gave. Hoewel Melinda haar gave af en toe kan vervloeken helpt ze altijd diegene die om hulp vragen.
