A little bit of advice: you don't optimize for 1 device in particular. You optimize for the format standards which will be compliant with all devices that support the format.

No. If you convert to XviD properly it will work on ALL gear. The reason any device is "fussy" is because you're still not doing it right.

So you're trying to say Sony decided to change it's DivX standards support on their year 2012 model SmartTV to be different from all previous Sony devices which had DivX playback capabilities? e.g. PS3, PSP, BluRay players. \n

As for the MeGUI converts, nobody has ever commented to me about their MeGUI converts not working on a device. All I've heard was thank yous for giving a tutorial because it saved them a lot of time waiting for someone else to make an .AVI. And XviD videos aren't rocket science; make a h.263 video, use mp3 or ac3 audio, and the header which is written by avi-mux so the audio is aligned on interleaves for a/v synch -- all done in MeGUI. Never given me any problems on the Sony devices I have access to (PS3/PSP/BluRay player). So again, you're suggesting Sony changed their model of DivX support on their SmartTV's to differ from their previous devices? I highly doubt it.\n

I will give you a thumbs up for one thing... You finally started using AS@L5 instead of simple@L3. That's 1 step in the right direction. Now if you want to get rid of the tiling and artifacts that I see in your videos you should consider 2-pass video encoding. Only takes a few minutes more because the 1st pass is a quick analysis pass. Then, instead of wasting bits on slow movement sections, title screens or still shots, the encode will use much lower bitrate there and save the use of higher bitrates for scenes that really need it. You're basically choking the video from it's max possible quality by using CBR video. If you really knew what you were doing you would already know about this.

direct usb.. sony treats both differently\n
they are sucky tv compared to samsungs!\n
and ive never noticed artifacts..on laptop or 52" tv nor do I care if\n
some occur in a split second of viewing.. \n
never noticed any gear struggling with CBR should make it easier\n
for all devices and less likely sync problems that I have seen on many mp4s

If I can see the artifacts on the PC display they're only going to be worse on an large TV. You can get rid of them by doing 2pass encodes. Only takes an extra minute or two as it goes at 100+fps for the first pass. It baffles me as to why you don't do so. CBR audio is fine, but CBR video? Seriously, why do you not put the extra 2 minutes of encode time to make a much better result that will even get me off your back about it?

I'm tellin ya - and all others - the MeGUI One-Click profile in my guide is set up for maximum device support. I bet your "fussiness" was QPel or packed bitstream. My setup doesn't use either of those. The only other thing that devices don't like is an odd frame size like 637x359. That's obviously a no-no. The tutorial uses 640x360. I betcha the output AVI will work just fine on that snooty Sony TV; streamed and via USB... which by the way if it's the same Sony TV I'm thinking of... they support mp4 and mkv videos, at least the recent models do, so there's no need to convert mp4's or mkv's if owning a newer Sony TV.\n

As a final note - I hardly ever see any synch problems with mp4. It seems only you do after you convert it however you do to avi. Hasn't happened to me yet with the various videos I've tossed at MeGUI for testing.
