gesserit's favourites: New Series for the Year 2014 (Size: 3.24 GB)
DescriptionThis annual digest of my regular "favourite first issues" packs contains everything published this year for each month's single most favourite new title. Well, except for the January pick being an entirely new addition, because I only started the Monthlies in February. Note that this narrowing-down was based on the entire run to date, and not merely on the debuts themselves - which, not-so-coincidentally, "forced" me to read something like 200 issues over the course of the last week, wonderfully reducing my backlog in the process. :P In retrospect, I'm no longer sure that this was really the best way to go about this - there was more than one month whose second-best I liked quite a bit better than some of the very-bests for other months, and it seemed a bit contrived to exclude the former, among which are such brilliant works as February's "Undertow" and last month's "Drifter", and include the latter in their stead. In other words, maybe it would've been better to just do a straightforward Top-Ten without any regard to when the titles debuted, or something along those lines. By the time I figured that out, I'd progressed too far within the original approach to switch over to another, though. Oh, and as you can see, I totally failed to narrow it down to a single selection for June - making a body choose between Ellis, Gillen, and Naifeh would just be too cruel, as I hope you'll agree! :P Includes: - 1 concluded and 13+1 continuing works, comprising a grand total of 4 trades volumes and 49+3 regular and 1 preview issues. - Series written by Kurt Busiek, Warren Ellis, Kieron Gillen, Ted Naifeh, Greg Rucka, Walt Simonson, Rick Remender, and others. - 1 title published by each of Aspen, Dark Horse, Devil's Due, IDW, and Oni, 2 titles from Boom Studios, and (drumroll, please) a full half-dozen from the undisputed, unparalleled, and unsurprising winner... you-know-in-whose-Image! What is surprising is the absence of Vertigo; but, to be honest, I did not find any of theirs truly outstanding, so that likely isn't just the result of my aforementionedly-questionable month-based approach.
