She is not a lone standard bearer for old-fashioned singer-songwriting. There is a lot of it about, from the new acoustic bards Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard to the more rambunctious folk of Mumford & Sons. It may well be that the direct, confessional, lo-fidelity intimacy of single-camera video performances suits the YouTube medium as much as the slick, sexy productions of major label stars. “I think people like it because it feels honest,” says Aplin.
Growing up in what she describes as “a bit of a hippy household” in Wiltshire, Aplin’s tastes were shaped by her family’s “old vinyls”, the gentle sounds of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen and Karen Carpenter. Her mother played classical piano and Aplin taught herself to play. “I never had a lesson, I just sort of figured out how it all worked.”
Crucially, like so many of her generation, she would film herself playing and post the results on YouTube. “I cringe when I see those early videos,” she says. “Nobody knew about it at the time, I didn’t even tell people at my school, because I felt quite shy. I just thought it was cool
