Description
Giovanni Gabrieli's career is inextricably linked with the Republic of Venice, where he finished learning his craft (from his uncle, Andrea) and rose to the top of his profession. Although he was not the creator of the Venetian polyphonic style as often stated (Willaert probably was, years before), his instrumental and choral polyphonic works became instant hits, and retained a degree of popularity for hundreds of years before the "early music" movement could bring them back to full favor.
These pieces from the late 16th century show the composer at his most virtuosic, expressive, and theatrical. The intended performing group is what would have been called at the time a "loud ensemble," sackbuts and cornetts, or the ancestor of the trombone and an instrument with a very trumpet-like, bright top. It's ceremonial music at its finest, the kind of thing Venice liked to celebrate its own splendor. Today, it celebrates that of Gabrieli. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc.
