DescriptionGirolamo Frescabaldi was a Ferrarese child prodigy who settled in Rome. He held various positions, of which the most important was organist of St Peter's Basilica. He's been called the first significant composer to focus most of his energies on instrumental music, which was still regarded half a century before his time as best left to transcriptions--or the unpleasant music of peasants. Much of what he wrote was fortunately published, since he had very powerful and wealthy protectors. He was known as a great improviser at the organ and harpsichord, and an authority in such a matters. He taught others, and commanded top fees for it, too. It is known that more of his music existed than was published, as his son, an art collector, discussed a variety of his manuscripts, but no further material was ever issued.
