Description



The Renaissance lutenist, improviser and composer Francesco Canova da Milano was sometimes called "Il Divino," from the beauty of his playing. He was easily the most popular lutenist of his times; and more of his works survive in manuscript than any of his contemporaries. This selection of his music gives a fair sampling for his melodic charm, his sprung rhythms, and his counterpoint that sounds easy, but is treacherous to play.



Paul O'Dette is in turn one of the best of today's lutenists. The music's difficulties mean nothing to him, and his tone is considered one of the finest.
