Erich Kunzel & Cincinnati Pops Orchestra

A DISNEY SPECTACULAR
DISNEY FAVORITES

formato lossless (FLAC)

ADESSO E' NATALE!

Holy smokes!!! Just when you think you just might have heard it all...along comes this Telarc wonder having the nerve to bear the name "Disney" in its title. Imagine...Telarc and Disney together?? As they say...who woulda thunk it?!!

Well, I'm not ashamed to tell you that I've owned this disc for all of fifteen years now as it was purchased in the early days of my CD collection. It is as explosive as Disneyland's fireworks displays themselves and can damage a more than just modest system if not treated appropriately!

Every Disney song featured in Walt's classic movies from "Snow White" to "Song Of The South" {yay...my favorite!} and everything else is covered in some shape or form on this masterpiece recording and all you gotta do is sit back and listen!

Okay, Hoosier fans...you've got The May Festival Chorus combining with The Indiana School Of Music's "Singing Hoosiers Choir" led by Soprano...Tracy Dahl and Baritone...Douglas Webster with Erick Kunzel conducting The Cincinnatti Pops Orchestra. The recording label is of course none other than Telarc.

Let's see...The May Festival Chorus, Indiana School Of Music Choir, Kunzel, The Cincinnatti Pops and Telarc???!!!! Holy smokes, mama...what a batting order!! You talk about music being emotional...well you've got it in droves here!

Now, the normal thing for a reviewer to do here is to take you by the hand and walk you through the score for the given performance but I am not your normal reviewer! All kidding aside...you know the music and the songs as every single Disney classic to ever hit the big screen or find its way to lacquer is present on this enormous CD.

I know I tend to be passionate and even emotional at times but I must warn you that this is one of those performances that said recording label likes to awe its perspective audiences with.

The Cincinnatti Pops appears to be out to prove that they are the greatest orchestra God has ever given this good earth as their fearless leader...Erich Kunzel is no less emotional in his role as one of the world's finest maestros. The recording is chock full of rich textures, harmonious voices and yes...even those fantastic tympani gut punchers! Subtleties, overtones and nuances are definitely present...should your system be able to recognize them.

The Hoosiers Choir and May Festival Chorus featuring the voices of Douglas Webster and Tracy Dahl give one the impression that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir just might be second-rate amateurs that are only playing around when comparing the two but alas...you're not fooling us, youngsters as we know better! Seriously though...this choir's emotional level is precisely that of maestro and orchestra's...REALLY HIGH!!

Oh, the performance starts off innocently enough with a tender orchestral rendition of "When You Wish Upon A Star" and although maybe not quite as memorable as Jiminey Cricket's but mission accomplished nonetheless. By the time Track 3..."Alice In Wonderland" {one of my very favorites!} rolls around...well...you just know that you are in for it as the emotion I speak of climaxes with a crescendo that just may prove to be the undoing of your audio system!

The orchestra sparkles while Kunzel is a master! He knows exactly how to treat each song and the orchestra and Chorus follow suit. They know when to be tender..."When You Wish Upon A Star" or when to be lighthearted and playful..."How Do You Do And Shake Hands" along with "A very Merry Unbirthday" and "Baroque Hoedown" or when to take you lock, stock and barrel to the very tip of your emotions..."It's A Small World", "The Golden Afternoon", "Lets Go Fly A Kite" and "Someday My Prince Will Come".

Okay, Mouseketeers...just in case you may have forgotten all of the stomping and bomping you used to subject the floor of your TV room to every weekday around 5 P.M., Kunzel and co. will have you parading once more with "The Mickey Mouse Club March". Every "boom boom boom boom" will tickle your inner child and tingle your spine like a long lost friend being reunited with your big heart!

There is even a segment from "The Jungle Book" featuring His Master's Voice Barbershop Quartet! Nicely done, boys! Alas, at this point the sixty-eight minute ten second CD is yet not finished. There is yet but more!

By the time the performance approaches its closing, the richly talented orchestra and chorus will have you wondering what could possibly be left? The answer soon follows with a barrage of Disney classics that you just may have tucked away deep within the caverns of the very thoughtful part of your being that perhaps also betrayed your child-like innocence sometime ago.

And then there is the Grand Finale that takes the opening number and thrusts it at you one more time and with one fell swoop...brings said performance to dramatic conclusion in exemplary manner! Buyer beware as the final note is definitely not for the faint of heart or speaker system and Telarc's flare for the "shock and awe" is ever in evidence so abundantly. Be forewarned! A word to the wise is sufficient. This recording is not one to be used at high levels during "Loudspeaker Break-in".

Undoubtedly, young couples with toddlers may find the recording to be both entertaining and yet pacifying when the appropriate moments arise. This may very well be the instance that makes this recording so priceless!

The recording leans toward warmth in its overall tonality with emphasis on deep bass notes and somewhat reticent but transparent highs. Some folk may desire to give their treble a bit of boost while others will be quite content to leave the tone controls in their "flat" position. However, if you're seeking phony brilliance in this work...look elsewhere.

In summation, the Telarc engineers have a masterpiece on their hands with "A Disney Spectacular". All too few recordings can touch its emotional and dynamic range but far many more audio novices, purists and casual listeners alike will indeed be wooed by both its sentimental and yet powerful arrangements. Like yours truly...well...You just may find yourself to be spellbound! ([url=http://www.epinions.com/review/_2006756251/content_163793899140]epinions.com[/urk])
