Ann-Marie Macdonald's Fall On Your Knees is an emotionally difficult novel for the reader, raising issues of incest, pedophelia and domestic abuse. It's story follows the life of a rather oddly put together family -- a local man, ambitious but arrogant and twisted in a way no one at the time (pre World War I) recognizes, who marries a pre-teen immigrant daughter of a Lebanese family, and their four daughters.

The daughters, loving their parents but seeking a way out of the horror of their family life, show how the past can remain a part of you without defining you, no matter where or how you grow up -- eventually they create their own identities and through them find a place in a changing world (through the after effects of the "Great War", to the jazz age and New York city, religion and faith, and finally, love that comes sometimes in unexpected forms).

This novel will strike the core of your heart...it's title is apt...it will make you feel as though there is sometimes no option but to "fall on your knees" at the grotesqueries life offers, as well as the sublime enchantment of those moments in which you feel most alive, and transformed.(H-A)
