F1 Legends - Alan Jones - 720p

Winning in sport for the first time always holds a special resonance. For Australia's Alan Jones that comes in the form of being the first man to win the World Championship for one of Formula 1's most historic teams, Williams. Six drivers - including several fellow F1 legends -repeated his 1980 triumph over the course of the next 17 years but Jones was very much the first. And always will be.

Given that his father, Stan, was a renowned race driver in his homeland, it should have been little surprise that the Melbourne-born driver made it to the very top of his profession. Jones was already a five-time race winner going into what turned into his championship year yet his route to the upper echelons of F1 had required all the guts, determination and single-mindedness that became his trademarks during the course of his 116-race career.

Like many future stars of his era, Jones had to fund the majority of his early career in a bid to try to establish himself as a name of the future and required plenty of perseverance to do so, especially when he came to Britain in the late 1960s. Initially, progress was painstakingly slow as he juggled several money-making ventures, but in 1973 he finally received sponsorship for an F3 season, in which he would finish as runner-up, before competing in a full season of Formula Atlantic a year later.

At 28, Jones was finally on the brink of the big time and mid-way through 1975 he made his debut in a privately-entered Hesketh for the Spanish GP at the Montjuïc street circuit, a race that would be overshadowed by the deaths of five spectators who were hit by Rolf Stommelen's car. While Stommelen was convalescing from the accident, World Champion-turned-team owner Graham Hill gave Jones the chance to fill in for four races and the rookie

rewarded that decision with a fifth-place finish in his final appearance at the German GP.

For 1976, Jones was hired by another ex-champion who had turned his hand to team ownership, John Surtees, and while three top-five finishes during the year were respectable, a clash of personalities saw Jones begin the next season without a drive. He was soon handed another chance with the Shadow outfit a handful of races into 1977, although it again came in unfortunate circumstances after Tom Pryce was killed in the South African round. Jones would soon justify his selection, however, and in changeable conditions at the Austrian GP mid-way through the season made the podium for the very first time - and on the top step no less.

Frank Williams came calling that winter for his new-look Williams Grand Prix Engineering outfit and so began the most fruitful phase of Jones's career. While year one proved unspectacular, Patrick Head's 1979 car was far more competitive and gave Jones the platform to win four of that season's final six rounds, securing third place in the World Championship.
