When someone merely tells you to download Tor Browser, they are doing you a disservice.

How to be Anonymous Online - Alternatives presents detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to properly download, authenticate and configure a number of free, open-source anonymity programs for Windows. Most of this guide shies away from Tor. Not because I do not like Tor, I love Tor, but because there is so much more to being anonymous online. Most of these pages cover Checksums, Hashes, PGP, I2P, Freenet, SeaMonkey, and Newsgroups. But, don't worry, I still make sure you have a proper Tor installation.

Authentication is the most important part of being anonymous online, yet clear steps for authenticating software are what other guides leave out, probably because things can get complicated. I keep the steps orderly and detailed, yet concise.

Checksums, hash values, and PGP are critical for verifying and authenticating files. If you do not know how to use and apply them, you do not know how to be anonymous. Furthermore, PGP opens you up to the ability to communicate indirectly. When you properly encrypt messages, you no longer need to send then directly to a recipient, you can toss them into the general public. Not only is the message secret, but there is not even an anonymous end point to investigate.

When you finish this manual, you will know the ends and outs of PGP. Gone will be the confusion of loading PGP keys and verifying signatures.

I do not a give you a laundry list of programs and services to subscribe too. Nor do I merely give you short descriptions of suggested programs. Nothing I show you costs money and nothing I show you requires a subscription. Everything I show you is presented with detailed steps on proper authentication, so you do not fall victim to those that want to unmask you

I2P and Freenet both grant you access to online communities that simply are not accessible through Tor. Additionally, they bring with them features that Tor lacks.

This guide presents a more convenient method for being anonymous online than my other guide, "How to be Anonymous Online." Instead of creating a completely isolated operating system that you secretly run on a computer from a flash drive or your phone's microSD card, you integrate these steps into your daily Windows system.

There is no need to log out of or reboot your computer when you want to be anonymous online. You simply run the underlying software, then access it through your SeaMonkey browser, which I have you customize to avoid commingling anonymous and non-anonymous browsing activities.
