Both of these movies follow the same plot line, but are two different takes by directors, Renny Harlan, and Paul Schrader. Dominion was set to be "the prequel" but was stopped for fear it wouldn't do very well. They decided to go with Exorcist the beginning, and it didn't do well, so then they decided to pay Schrader to finish his version and it went on to reach #1 at the box office.
