Plot :

In the 19th century, a Grande Dame summons The Brothers Grimm to her palace, where the brothers discuss their interpretation of the Cinderella story and notice a painting displayed in the room. The Grande Dame shows the brothers a glass slipper and tells them the story of Danielle de Barbarac, the true story of Cinderella. In 16th-century France, widower Auguste de Barbarac, father of eight-year-old Danielle, marries Rodmilla de Ghent, a wealthy baroness with two young daughters, Maguerite and Jacqueline, but he dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards. Before dying, Auguste's last words are directed to Danielle which causes the Baroness to envy Danielle and treat her miserably. While Marguerite is hostile to Danielle, Jacqueline is kinder and more respectful to her, though she often stays out of the action to keep the peace. By the time Danielle is eighteen, she has been reduced to a servant in her own house, waiting on her stepmother and stepsisters, and clinging to her father's last gift, a copy of Thomas More's Utopia. While collecting apples, Danielle sees a man stealing her father's horse and unseats him with an apple. When she recognizes he is Prince Henry, she abases herself. He gives her a bag of gold in exchange for her silence. She decides to use the money to...

Trama :

Agli inizi del XIX secolo la regina di Francia racconta ai fratelli Grimm la vera storia di Cenerentola: siamo nel 1500 Danielle (Drew Barrymore) è cresciuta con l'adorato padre, ricco possidente terriero, fino all'età di 8 anni amando la letteratura e dando di scherma fino a quando papà Auguste (Jeroen Krabbé) muore d'infarto lasciando la piccola con la matrigna la perfida Baronessa Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) e le due sorellastre la bella ed arida Marguerite (Megan Dodds) e la grassoccia (e più buona) Jacqueline (Melanie Lynskey). Da allora la ragazza cambia il suo modo di vivere e comincia ad essere trattata da serva in quella che fino ad un attimo prima era la sua casa. Un giorno mentre lascia gli abiti da serva ed indossa quelli della madre morta per riscattare la vita di un servitore incontra il Principe Henry (Dougray Scott) che si innamora subito di quella nobildonna dal carattere energico e coraggioso. Ad ostacolare il loro amore...
