I found a second copy of Eugene Goossens' 1942 recording of Tchaikovsky's "Little Russian" Symphony. What was especially gratifying was that with this new copy, an excellent (problem-free) transfer was possible - much more so than with my previous copy. In all my listening experience, the first time I heard this one stands out the most vividly in my mind. It was around 1963 when I took the library 78's of this recording home with me (the copy was not in the best of shape, as I remember). But it was the first time I'd ever heard the Second Symphony - and I will never forget the effect Goossens' handling of the Finale had on me. And the great thing is that when I listen to the Finale all these years later, it has the same effect. Not just "any" recorded music allows us to reconnect with ourselves. Only one-time exceptions such as this one. _________________ New 78rpm transfer; material issued 2007. Includes cover, label and notes (English, German and French). Sharing Widget |
