Description  You’d probably never imagine a file compression program to be described as cute, adorable or delightful, but in the case of our #3 pick ALZip, all of these adjectives are true. ALZip uses a little egg character as their mascot/icon, which makes a dull concept like file compression slightly more interesting and fun. And not only does the software work great, but it's free! ALZip is an extremely easy to use file archiver, and although it isn’t chock full of features like our #1 and #2 products, it gets the job done with no hassles. Its ZIP compression ratio is comparable to WinZip's “Legacy” and most of the other file compression programs we reviewed. Features: When it comes to features, there isn’t anything particularly special about ALZip. It includes the basics like encrypted password protection, multi-volume support and access from Windows explorer, but that’s about it. Perhaps ALZip’s fanciest features are the ability to create self-extracting archives and integration with your virus scanner. You can also access ALZip through Windows Explorer using the right-click functionally of your mouse. We also like how easy ALZip’s settings and preferences are. In the Preferences screen, you can set your default archive, file association, file paths and more. ALZip may not be the most powerful file compressor we reviewed, but we felt it was one of the most efficient. We did notice one useless, but fun feature associated with ALZip. When you create a new folder in Windows Explorer, ALZip will arbitrarily assign your new folder the name of a bird, to go with the egg theme, instead of naming it the generic “New Folder” that Windows always assigns. Compression: ALZip performed well in our ZIP compression test. ALZip’s overall ZIP compression was slightly better than WinZip’s “Legacy” compression with Word and Excel documents performing the best. In addition to testing ZIP compression, we also tested ALZip using its native ALZ compression. The ALZ compression is about the same as ZIP, with Word documents being the biggest exception. ZIP had considerably better compression with Word documents than the ALZ archive. Compression Formats: ALZip will compress to a fair number of archives including ZIP, 7z and TAR. Although ALZip doesn’t write to the most formats, it does cover most of the basics. ALZip’s native archive format is ALZ, but we found there is no other file compression software that can read ALZ. So, we suggest you stick to ZIP. Besides, ZIP has better compression than ALZ. Extraction Formats: With support for more than 30 archives and file types, ALZip probably extracts more archives and files than any other file compression program we reviewed, including the most popular formats, ZIP and RAR. Ease of Use: ALZip is one of the easiest to use file compression programs we reviewed. The clean and intuitive interface, and drag and drop functionality makes it almost pleasurable to use. The only thing keeping ALZip from receiving a perfect score in this category is that it doesn’t have a Wizard. A few functions that we like about ALZip, that ultimately makes the software easier to use, include the ability to change the compression ratio, the spanned archive size and the password directly in the new file menu, and when you drag a new folder into an opened archive, the software will ask you if you want to create a new archive or just add these files to the current one. Help & Support: ALZip includes a built-in user guide which is duplicated as the online help and active forums. Recently, ALZip manufacturer ESTsoft has stopped supplying an email address for support. All support questions are directed to the forums. Also, this is minor, but we noticed that if you try to access the ALZip homepage from the ALZip application you are directed to the Korean homepage. Summary: In the end, ALZip isn’t the powerhouse of file compression software that WinZip or WinRAR is, but it is a tiny, effective and easy to use application that will get the job done.
