Description Ernst Toch was an extremely sought after composer in Central Europe until WWII began, sending him out of country and into semi-obscurity. He continued to get commissions, but had to teach to make ends meet for a long time. Eventually, after a heart attack, he gave up his university post and devoted himself fulltime to composition once more. His symphonies date from this latter period. This release includes the First and Fourth Symphonies, the latter of which includes bits of spoken poetry Toch wrote in honor of his late patron, the wife of the composer MacDowell, which frankly isn't at the same level as the music. Still, for what it's worth, it's included, here. The performances are decent, and the music far more so. A bio of Toch is enclosed.
