Erik Chisholm - Sym No 2 - M Yates, Royal Scottish Nat Orch (2007) [Philidor; FLAC]

Although little known today, Erik Chisholm was the first Scottish composer to systematically investigate the music of his nation, and integrate it both in form and content into his works--so much so, that he acquired the nickname MacBartok. Rather than remain in post-war UK where decisions had been made by artistic higher-ups to push only Britten and serialists, Chisholm accepted an offer in 1947 of the chair of music at Cape Town University. He then revived the South African College of Music, started an opera company, became a well-knmown figure on the podium, both at home and abroad. Though he composed roughly 100 works, few of them were published, and much remains in manuscript.

The second of his two symphonies dates from 1939, and shows him with a distinctive personality based on bitonality, edgy, Scots-tinged themes, and frequent passing dissonance. It is a highly distinctive composition or imagination and originality, with a unique treatment of the orchestra, and a strong lyrical undertow beneath its sometimes bristling surface.
