Description
Edward Elgar
Variations on an Original Theme, 'Enigma', Op. 36 London Symphony Orchestra Pierre Monteux (Decca, 1971) In The South (Alassio), Op. 50 (concert overture) Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 in G, Op. 39 Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Yehudi Menuhin (1994) ___________________________ Not long ago, I noticed that I have five different recordings of Elgar's "Enigma Variations" (Barbirolli, Sargent, Previn, Menuhin and Monteux). I'm not sure how this happened - but, OK, I have them. All of these recordings have their good points. What's interesting to me, however, is that my final "pick" of all of them is from the only non-British conductor in the lot - Pierre Monteux (who, on the other hand, does conduct the London Symphony). The recording mentioned above from Yehudi Menuhin includes an Elgar work which I've not encountered elsewhere: the concert overture "In The South (Alassio)", Op. 50. The conducting, performing and music in this recording is something to hear if one doesn't already know it. ____________________________ LP transfer; digital material. Includes cover, notes & label.
