John Barbirolli had become a fixture on the British musical scene by the 1950s, though the greatest triumphs of his international career still lay ahead. He was prized as a remarkable orchestra builder, a person of indefatigable energy, a zealous champion for the arts in the UK, and a conductor with an especially fine grasp of color and tone. The first of his three recordings of Elgar's Cockaigne Overture swaggers wildly, with plenty of rich string tone to counterpoint the slower, more reflective themes.
