Het verhaal is ge?nspireerd op een Japanse expeditie uit 1957.

Frank Marshall, de regisseur van 'Eight Below',

heeft al eerder met 'Alive' (1993)

een waargebeurd verhaal verfilmd

over barre omstandigheden in de sneeuw

en de grenzen die levende wezens

door moed en uithoudingsvermogen kunnen verleggen

in zo'n situatie.



Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker), zijn beste vriend

Cooper (Jason Biggs)

en een ruige Amerikaanse geoloog (Bruce Greenwood)

doen onderzoek op de Zuidpool.

Ze worden bijgestaan door een groep van acht sledehonden.

Dankzij deze honden ontsnappen ze bij een ongeluk

ternauwernood aan de dood.



Vanwege de barre weersomstandigheden

moeten de drie mannen zo spoedig mogelijk evacueren.

Er zit niets anders op dan de acht sledehonden aan de ketting

achter te laten in het strenge winterweer,

waar de dieren wekenlang een bittere overlevingsstrijd voeren.



Jerry heeft zijn honden de belofte gedaan om terug te komen

en hij zet een gevaarlijke expeditie op touw

om de acht sledehonden terug te halen.

The fierce Antarctic winter is just setting in
