Description

The intensity of this 1944 "New World" Symphony recording was such that for a long time, when only known by dubs, it was thought to be the work of the most famous German conductor of the period, Furthwangler. Recent decades have revealed that instead it was led by Oswald Kabasta, a fine musician who made the mistake of siding vocally with the Nazi regime. Others who joined the party and kept a low profile managed to slip into the 1950s without too many problems, such as Karajan, and Schwarzkopf, but Kabasta's early visible enthusiasm prevented his protests after World War II from gaining much credence. It was removed from his post, and ultimately committed suicide. Politics aside, the recordings remain.

A bio of Kabasta is enclosed.
