Dowland - Comp Lute Works, vol 2 - P O'Dette, lute (1994) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 286.26 MB)
Description
John Dowland was one of the most influential composers of solo lute and lute song music in England, in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was in great demand at a time before the Puritans took the reins of government, and declared music outside of direct worship a terrible sin. While the majority of his works--including his greatest hit that went through endless transcriptions, "Flow My Tears," or Lachrymae--expresses acute melancholia, Dowland in person was said to be a lively, good-natured and amusing. Queen ELizabeth found him too open about his Roman Catholicism (with just a hint of possible spying when he went abroad) and was angry over the subject, but Dowland was a favorite of her contemporary Christian IV of Denmark, who made the lutenist/composer one of the most highly paid members of his court. And though Elizabeth refused to give Dowland a position in turn at her court, her successor, James I, had no difficulty doing so.
Dowland's lute music is extensive, with some works existing in significant variants in multiple manuscripts. Paul O'Dette's traversal tried to take all of these into account. When someone requested his set, I pointed out that I only have three of the five discs; but they were still wanted. So this is the first of the three; and if I can locate at some point the fourth and fifth, will make them available, with the understanding that the transcriptions are entirely out of my hands. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc. Bio enclosed.
