Donald Byrd - 1963 - A New Perspective (2013 HDtracks) [FLAC@192khz24bit] Donald Byrd Wikipedia: Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd is also notable for his influential role in the early career of keyboard player and composer Herbie Hancock. The performances are mainly in a hard bop style, but the recording also features a gospel choir. About the project, Byrd said: "I mean this album seriously. Because of my own background, I've always wanted to write an entire album of spiritual-like pieces. The most accurate way I can describe what we were all trying to do is that this is a modern hymnal. In an earlier period, the New Orleans jazzmen would often play religious music for exactly what it was - but with their own jazz textures and techniques added. Now, as modern jazzmen, we're also approaching this tradition with respect and great pleasure." Original recording and 1998 remastering by Rudy Van Gelder. Cover photograph and design Reid Miles. Liner photograph Francis Wolf. AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow: This unusual set was one of the most successful uses of a gospel choir in a jazz context. Trumpeter Donald Byrd and a septet that includes tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and pianist Herbie Hancock are joined by an eight-voice choir directed by Coleridge Perkinson. The arrangements by Duke Pearson are masterful and one song, "Cristo Redentor," became a bit of a hit. This is a memorable effort that is innovative in its own way, a milestone in Donald Byrd's career. 01 - Elijah - 9:21 02 - Beast Of Burden - 10:07 03 - Cristo Redentor - 5:43 04 - Black Disciple - 8:12 05 - Chant - 7:31 Personnel: Donald Byrd, Trumpet Hank Mobley, Tenor Saxophone Donald Best, Vibes Kenny Burrell, Guitar Herbie Hancock, Piano Butch Warren, Bass Lex Humphries, Drums Voices Directed by Coleridge Perkinson Arrangements by Duke Pearson ♪♬♫ ENJOY! ♪♬♫ Sharing Widget |
