Occasionally, Robert Lindsay sounds a little too excited on the voiceover here, bigging up medical emergencies in Afghanistan: "Terrible injuries . . . lives hanging in the balance . . ." he announces in that rumbling voice of his, and for a moment you worry they might be making the series for the wrong kind of grisly reasons. But it's OK, it's just a glitch. And the action the cameras capture, following the doctors and nurses in Camp Bastion in Helmand, is extraordinary. One scene, in which surgeons agonise over whether to amputate a wounded soldier's legs, is nightmarish. "It comes to a point," explains the top surgeon, "where it's life versus limb."
