DescriptionWhen Doctor Thorne's niece Mary is excluded from the wedding preparations of her childhood playmate, she asks her uncle about the circumstances of her birth. She is devastated to learn that she is the illegitimate child of his late brother, and has neither breeding nor fortune. This is a problem, for Mary has fallen in love with Frank, the heir to the local Greshamsbury estate. However, Frank's overbearing mother Lady Arabella needs him to marry into money to save the family from financial ruin.
