Jane Moore examines recent scandals in the wine industry, looking at 40 different substances that can be used in wine production but rarely appear on the label of the average bottle. She pays particular attention to the quality of the soil in the Champagne region, where up until fairly recently the land could be fertilised with untreated household waste. This is a big deal for the British consumer as we are the world's biggest importer of France's bubbly stuff.

The New World crowd don't get off lightly as Jane takes the five big exporters to the UK market from the USA and Australia - Hardy's, Gallo, Blossom Hill, Jacob's Creek and Stowells - to task as to why they don't include a detailed list of ingredients in their wine, and whether that lack of information is a loophole through which they can get away with all manner of sharp practice.
