From the editor We all have our preferred ways of working, whether it is with watercolour, oil paint, charcoal, pastels or something else. Through experimentation and time we find the materials and subjects that interest us, and the approaches that help us to make the kind of work we are aiming for. We know how those materials work, and can make the most of the familiarity that grows with working with them. But every now and then, it’s worth breaking out. Having a steady focus on a single way of working may just turn into becoming stuck in a rut. Have we been making the same work over and over again when we would sooner be striking off in new directions? This issue of Discover Art features the work of artists working in a variety of media and techniques that may help us find new ways of working. James Read uses books and bill posters in his small collage works, Kati Meden takes the digital route in her job as an illustrator, and printmaker Helen Peyton turns to a half-ton press in her studio to make linoprints. The Gallery page features artists who scan their work, use spray paint, or cut into plastic to make prints. Also in this issue, there are our regular product reviews – this month sculpture blocks, acrylic markers and watercolour paper – and news from around the world of art.
