Colin McRae: DiRT 2
Colin McRae may have tragically passed away in a helicopter accident in 2007, but despite this shocking blow to the world of motorsport his name and legend still burn brightly, thanks at least to some degree due to Codemasters hugely popular video game franchise based around his reputation. Of course, much has changed in both the gaming industry and thus the Colin McRae franchise as a whole since those early days of entirely rallying focused titles, with a broader range of disciplines and challenges added to the game over the years to create a far more broadly focused off-road racing experience as we entered the DiRT subtitled era, an effort which continues to pervade into every aspect of this latest Colin McRae game, DiRT 2. While console owners have been racing around deserts and muddy plains kicking up dust for a little while now, PC owners have had to wait until this week to get to do likewise - As a reward for their patience however, they get all of the usual benefits of the PC gaming community (higher resolutions, lots of graphics options to play with) as well as a bundle of brand-new DirectX 11 functionality for those of you lucky enough to own one of AMD's Radeon HD 5000 series graphics boards (and a copy of Windows Vista or Windows 7, of course). So, was the addition of DirectX 11 content worth the wait? In fact, never mind that, is DiRT 2 the new king of racing on the PC? Strap on your crash helmet, put on some racing gloves... and then realise you don't need either implement to play a computer game, so take them off quick so that you can enjoy DiRT 2 without looking like a pillock.Gameplay If there's one thing to be said for DiRT 2, it wastes no time throwing you into the thick of the action - No sooner has the game been loaded that one of the handful of racing celebrities who lend their visages, names and voices to the game (most of whom I've never heard of, although I do remember seeing Ken Block on Top Gear once) throws a car at you, jets you off to the nearest race track and throws you into the thick of things amongst a bunch of other cars before even thinking to ask your name, let alone whether you have a driving licence or not. So, prepared or not, within moments you'll be trading paint, throwing up mud and more likely than not upsetting those who you share the track with as you try and get to grips with the dirty get glitzy world of modern off-road racing. With that first race under your belt, this is where the single player portion of the game really kicks off, introducing you to the rather less glitzy trailer that is not only your home, but also doubles as the menu system for the game itself. From here, you can step outside to configure your game options (why are they outside? Shouldn't they be in your underwear drawer in the trailer or something?), buy cars to race with, and perhaps most importantly of all check out the game's world map to see what events you have available to you to race in.
