The bone gatherers of early Christianity were women who collected the bodies of martyred saints to give them a proper burial. Denzey argues that they were more than mere mourners. Like pagan women, the bone gatherers were women who devoted their lives and financial resources to what mattered most in their life: marriage, family, and religion. She uses archaeological evidence--buildings, burial sites, and art constructed in their memory--and texts to recreate the lives of several fourth-century women. Very interesting reading.
