Delalande - Symphonies pour les soupers du Roy - Hickox, BBC Nat Orch of Wales (1996) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 300.64 MB)
DescriptionMichel Delalande was one of many fine musicians hired to entertain Louis XIV at Versailles, and by all accounts, one of the finest. He was director of the Chapel Royale, and a musician who was considered peerless in composing grands motets, the large-scale motets Louis favored since they reflected the glory of his court as well as his beliefs. Delalande also wrote much music to accompany the King's large dinners, with their seatings for dozens of guests. Four manuscripts survive of this material, with enough differences of content to suggest they were merely the favorites of those who copied down his work. Bio enclosed.
