Defiance is an American science fiction television series developed for television by Rockne S. O'Bannon, Kevin Murphy, and Michael Taylor. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions, in transmedia collaboration with Trion Worlds, who are producing an MMORPG video game of the same name which will be tied into the series. Defiance stars Grant Bowler as Joshua Nolan, the local lawman in a border town known as Defiance, as well as Julie Benz, who plays the newly appointed mayor of Defiance, Amanda Rosewater. Also starring are Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, and Graham Greene.

The disease infecting Defiance appears to be carried by the Irathients; all Votans appear to be immune. The town council overrules Amanda and imposes a quarantine on the Irathients, holding them in a tunnel at McCawley Mines; one of the Irathients is shot and killed during a scuffle with the miners. Amanda, Nolan and Christie McCawley are all infected. A cure for the disease is dropped outside Defiance; Nolan and Connor Lang go to retrieve it, with Lang talking them through the Earth Republic quarantine around Defiance. On their return with the cure, they are intercepted and captured by several Irathients who avoided the quarantine; they threaten to destroy the cure unless the quarantine is lifted. Datak, acting in place of the critically ill Amanda, meets with the Irathient hijackers and pretends to go along with them before killing all of them; Connor witnesses the incident and Datak kills him, framing the dead hijackers. Nolan is unconscious from the disease and Datak gives him a shot of the cure, informing the town he has the medicine and the hijackers are dead. With the town recovering from the sickness and the ill-feeling brought on by the quarantine, Datak announces his intent to oppose Amanda for the position of mayor. Quentin McCawley gives Nicki the Votan artifact; she tells him his mother is not dead, but suffers from bipolar disorder and is alive in Mendecino, and he leaves Defiance to find to her. Yewll meets with Nicki and it is revealed that they and Birch had worked together before; Nicki tries to convince Yewll to rejoin her now that they have the artifact, which may be capable of reversing or extending the terraforming of Earth.
