Every five years for the last twenty years, two guys, Hu(Wang Tai Lang) and Madman Lu(Hui Bat Liu), have been meeting to see who has the best kung fu. For every five years, the two always fight to a draw and have yet to decide who has the best kung fu. Meanwhile, a young orphan boy, Fei Fei(Angela Mao), has been watching the two spar for a while and has a proposition for the two to decide who has the best kung fu. In order to decide whose kung fu is the best, Fei Fei asks the two old guys to teach him their kung fu. Once he masters their kung fu, he will use it on someone to determine whose kung fu is better.

While Fei Fei is going to town to pick up some food, he meets Ku Cheng-Yuan(Paul Chun), the first disciple of the Five Forms School. Cheng-Yuan is on the run from students from the 100 Bird School because they want to kill them. Luckily, Fei Fei is there to save Cheng-Yuan. Shortly, Fei Fei and Cheng-Yuan become fast friends but the friendship is lost when the heads of the 100 Bird School kills Cheng-Yuan and his Sifus brother. Fei Fei escapes from the slaughter and finds her way back to Hu and Madman Lu. Once Fei Fei finds the two old guys, he gets them to go along with his early proposition of teaching him kung fu so he can avenge the death of his friends to the 100 Bird School. The two old guys go along with Fei Fei to town to watch him use their gung fu. Fei Fei uses her gung fu on the students of the 100 Bird School brilliantly but later encounters the two Sifus of the Bird School, Lo Kuan-Tien and Mu Fa Shan(Chia Kai). Fei Fei loses badly to the two but later kills Lo Kuan-Tien with an eye towards Mu Fa Shan. Mu Fa Shan will be tough to beat because he is a master of the "upside-down horse boxing style".

When Taekwondo Strikes is a 1973 martial arts film directed and written by Feng Huang, produced by Raymond Chow. The exception with this film is the collective martial arts experience of the cast and the high quality fight choreography. The film features experienced and well known martial arts actors such as Angela Mao, Jhoon Rhee, the father of American Taekwondo, Wong In Sik(Ing-Sik Whang), Carter Wong, Kenji Kazama, Sammo Hung, Biao Yuen and Golden Harvest producer Andre Morgan. This was Jhoon Rhees only film.

The story is about the Korea under Japanese rule during World War II. A Korean nationalist played by Carter Wong gets into a fight with some non-Korean Japanese people and is chased into a church. The priest there is captured and tortured. Trying to secure his release, the leader of the resistance, Jhoon Rhee is himself captured and tortured by the Japanese. Carter Wong, Angela Mao and Anne Winton have to now try and rescue him. This leads to an explosive climax with the heroes having to fight the likes of Wong In Sik(Hwang In-Shik), Sammo Hung and Kenji Kazama.

Chu Siew Yen(Angela Mao) must find her masters brother if she ever wants to learn the truth behind her parents death. She quickly discovers that all is not right shortly after she arrives in town when all the locales are less then helpful and seem to known nothing. Along the way Chu Siew Yen meets a man who is also looking for someone a woman named Su Yen. They decide to team up when it become clear that the two people they are looking for are somehow connected.

Moonlight Sword and Jade Lion is a slow moving adventure that has an occasional outburst of dazzling action. The film stars Angela Mao(Angela Mao Ying) as Chu Siew Yen a sword fighting martial artist who can handle her own against any woman or man. Angela Mao is this films greatest asset and lonely saving grace. She is featured in all the most memorable fight sequences with my favorite moment where she fights the man who she later teams up with in the restaurant while they are eating. The hand to hand and use of objects around them as weapons and shields is inventive and perfectly put together.


This film while not Angela Mao best still shows why she was one of the first female action stars to achieve stardom during the marital arts craze of the 1970s.

The costumes and sets look well constructed and not cheap. This film also contains an interesting sub plot about two jade loin necklaces that are halves and when put together they person in possession of these will have the power to rule the kung fu world. This sub plot along with the main plot of Chu Siew Yen searching for the truth about her parents death blends nicely together. It is too bad that with such a strong plot that there are as many slow moments as they are in this film because when the action gets going the film really cooks. Ultimately most martial arts fans will find Moonlight Sword and Jade Lion a tedious affair while the more brave who work their way through it will find a flawed and times entertaining film.
