On these nights at New York's Bottom Line in 1997, he and his young band were on absolute fire, cooking up hard rocking renditions of Kinks classics, some penned by brother Ray, with an equal measure of Dave's own work thrown in. Demonstrating how real rock & roll is played, the band starts out jumping with "I Need You," follows with the kick of "She's Got Everything," and only gets better. "Wicked Annabella," "Picture Book," and "Death of a Clown" are more than nostalgic mid-set showings. After 24 songs, they unbelievably blaze through two rock-kid anthems, "David Watts" and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," and they even manage to suck another life out of the heavier than heavy monster riff of "You Really Got Me." One half of a brother act shouldn't be allowed to be this good. Amazon Review Dave Davies, legendary guitarist of one of the most influential bands of the rock era, the Kinks, shines in this new live release. Over the last few years, Davies has come out from under the considerable shadow of his prolific older brother Ray to play live in small clubs across the country. This release captures much of the intensity that has made these shows so memorable. Opening with an underappreciated nugget from the early Kinks era, "I Need You", Davies clearly demonstrates the prowess on guitar that has led to so many imitations. Blending select Ray-penned Kinks hits (such as "Tired Of Waiting", "You Really Got Me", etc…) with a healthy sampling of his own songs from the Kinks catalog ("Death of a Clown", the exquisite "Strangers" and "Living On a Thin Line", among others) and then throwing in some tastefully selected covers ("Milk Cow Blues" and "One Night With You"), Davies also demonstrates that big brother is not the only capable vocalist to come out of the band. Davies is an energetic performer, and that much comes clear in the banter with the crowd that has made it onto this recording. Nowhere is his humor more evident than a track called "Psycho Lounge", an oddly entertaining combination of "Lola", "Star Wars" and "Strawberry Fields". Among the many highlights is a blistering version of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else". The title of that song is so true - there are very few like Dave Davies. Rate Your Music Review Dave decides since The Kinks weren't doing much at this time, it was time for him to hit the road. If you are a fan of The Kinks or of Dave's solo stuff, this should make you very happy he made that decision. He and the band rip through 24 songs from both The Kinks and his solo career that should leave no doubt that the man can still rock as hard as anyone who ever picked up a guitar. He starts off with "I Need You" and going straight into "She's Got Everything" like a madman possessed. Those first two numbers leave little doubt that you are in for an excellent concert. Dave's in great voice, his guitar is cranked up to 11, and the rest of the band provides outstanding backing. "Love Me Till The Sun Shines" actually rocks without losing any of the feel of the original. As does "Look Through Any Window". "Strangers" from Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround (Part One) is done pretty faithfully to the album version and still remains one of my favorite Kinks songs. "Living On A Thin Line" is another highlight of the album. "All Day and All Of The Night" rocks as hard as any version I've ever heard of the song. Dave almost nails Ray's snarling vocals but not quite. "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" just plain smokes from beginning to end. Anyone who might doubt Dave's guitar playing ability should listen to the two brief but packed with a wallop guitar solos. "You Really Got Me" closes the album and once again proves that Eddie Van Halen is the pupil, Dave's the teacher Sharing WidgetAll Comments |
