Opis:

Na południu Stanów Zjednoczonych bez zmian - czarni są przez białych tak traktowani, jak w czasach "Przeminęło z wiatrem". Murzyn (brawurowa rola pamiętnego z "Pulp Fiction" Samuela L. Jacksona) dokonuje samosądu na białych gwałcicielach swej dziesięcioletniej córki. Jego obrony przed sądem podejmuje się młody, pełen żarliwych ideałów adwokat (McConaughey) wspierany przez błyskotliwą studentkę prawa (Bullock) oraz doświadczonego, niepraktykującego już nestora palestry (Sutherland). Rozpoczyna się pojedynek pomiędzy obroną a cynicznym, stającym na straży "Południowego" porządku, prokuratorem (rewelacyjny Kevin Spacey). Pojedynek przenosi się daleko poza mury sali sądowej. Na szalach Temidy ważą się: ludzkie życie, godność, przesądy, rasizm, sprawiedliwość. Obie strony są zdeterminowane, by udowodnić swoje racje.
