Description
One of the quintessential sounds of the 80s, the Frequency Modulation synth (in particular the Yamaha DX7)
has never really fallen completely out of fashion. Despite regular obsessions with and quests for rich and fat
analogue sounds, the often chillingly metallic and unnatural tones of FM synthesis open a sonic world that
engages the ear in ways tapes, valves and funky BBD echoes just can't. Bell tones, hard attack basses and
of course that ubiquitous electric piano sound, they're all classics.
This sample set features 11 FM synth instruments in multisample form (patched for Kontakt 5) and as loops
– bass lines and synth lines. Each of the eleven instruments have been used to create 3 lines in two of the
tempos (85, 100, 120 and 130bpm). Each instrument was worked up in the relevant synth platform and then
given a final dose of 80s process (chorus/modulation, Ampex ATR102 tape emulation, and some extra top
end enhancement via the Kush Clariphonic DSP plugin). The K2600 synth based instruments were recorded
via the Classic API VP26 preamps, ProVLA compressor and Arsenal Audio R24 EQ.
The instrument multisamples have been collated into Kontakt instruments (version 5) and run from C1 to
C4/5 with their sustain loops embedded in the WAV files, where applicable. All instruments have a highpass
filter assigned to the Mod Wheel (MIDI CC#01), a lowpass assigned to MIDI CC#74, and an amplitude
modulation LFO assigned to Aftertouch.
