Description
Reversal is the name of the game. Of course it's not just a case of selecting 'Reverse' n the audio
editor...oh no! The rhythmic loops (beats, tops, percussion) were first reversed, then edited to get a 'best fit'
(this sometimes means the loop starts with half a decayed hit of something). The loops were then bounced in
stripes through various (mostly subtle) processes, adding a little modulation, stereo enhancement,
compression, distortion and delay (not all of those, just a few here and there). The cymbals are cut to length
(1 or 2 bars) for their relevant tempos (90, 120 and 140bpms) so they can be dropped into a track with little
fiddling about – just timestretch in a bar-snapped mode and you're in, crescendo at the end of the bar.
The instrument loops were all performed forward and reversed...duh, of course they were...well sort of. The
CleanTele and HeavyTele loops in the 90bpm folder started as riffs written forwards, which I then reversed
and learned backwards recording them down as I went. Then I reversed the new 'backward' take to reveal
the original riff with a backward sound. Not all that easy, but I learned a few tricks along the way about
picturing a line backward. Having abandoned this arduous route, I just took my new found backward
aesthetic and played guitar and monosynth lines forward a few times round then having familiarised myself
with them reversed the note order and adjusted the phrasing to suit. Turned out good – I shall be applying
this trick again I think.
The drum, percussion and instrument loops have been collated into Kontakt instruments (version 5) and run
from C1 to wherever they reach (instruments assigned to white key values, rhythmic loops arranged
chromatically). The loops are set to adapt to whatever tempo the host is running at using the TimeMachine
Pro layer setting for the smoothest timestretching, which suits reversed material best. All instruments have a
highpass filter assigned to the Mod Wheel (MIDI CC#01), a lowpass assigned to MIDI CC#74, and an
amplitude modulation LFO assigned to Aftertouch.
