Disgusted with the policies of King Charles I, Oliver Cromwell plans to take his family to the New World. But on the eve of their departure, Cromwell is drawn into the tangled web of religion and politics that will result in the English Civil War.

Anno 1642. Re Carlo I Stuart occupa militarmente il parlamento inglese. È la guerra civile. L'armata lealista, guidata da Oliver Cromwell, sconfigge il re che viene giustiziato. Turgido film epico con una preziosa fotografia (G. Unsworth) e un'efficace colonna musicale (F. Cordell), ben curato nella ricostruzione scenografica e nei costumi, grandi scene di battaglia, ma senza cuore né grinta, accademico come un libro di scuola, e un grave difetto di fondo: re Carlo (A. Guinness) è più simpatico di Cromwell (R. Harris). Forse corrisponde alla verità storica, ma drammaturgicamente è una debolezza. Oscar per i costumi di Nino Novarese.
