Albie Kinsella, a middle-aged factory worker, estranged from his wife and child, is upset by the death of his father. After an argument with an Asian shopkeeper over some change, he goes home, shaves his head, then embarks on a vendetta against those he believes to have wronged him, starting with the shopkeeper, who he murders with his father's army bayonet. Fitz, no longer working with the police, first wins, and then later loses, £3000 gambling. Later, at his son's birthday party, he has a mild heart attack.
