Review of Coverdale/Page 4-CD bootleg set First and Last, recorded 12/14/93 and 12/22/93, respectively ---

The packaging is the best I’ve ever seen for a bootleg release. It’s a double-opening glossy digi-pack (e.g., it opens up into 4 panels) and contains some great live shots from the tour that I’ve never seen before. When the digi-pack is opened, the individual CDs slide into special sleeves behind the pictures. The back panel contains the complete track listings and dates of the two shows.

This set definitely contains the highest quality bootleg recordings from the too-few Coverdale/Page concerts (their *tour* consisted of only 7 shows, for those counting). The sound quality is not excellent, but I can assure you that it is the best out there at the present time. And for having played so few shows, there sure are a lot of various bootlegs available......choose wisely, as some of them are really poor quality.

Coverdale’s performance on these boots fluctuates; he sounds great on the songs where he uses his normal lower register, but he sometimes loses control when he tries to go for the stratospheric highs that dominate some of the songs -- particularly those from the Coverdale/Page album. Coverdale joked in a few interviews that he thought he was going to be able to mellow out a bit during the recording time in the studio, but then Page would come with a riff that would require him to scream his bollocks off! Coverdale actually does a terrific job on the Led Zeppelin songs. Rather than singing them in a Plant-like voice, Coverdale takes control of them and really makes them his own. I particularly like his performance on Kashmir. Whereas Plant sings the song in a sort of soft high-pitched whisper-like voice, Coverdale takes it lower and more powerful. Its different to the LZ version -- as it should be.

For the most part, both Coverdale and Page both sound very good on their own songs, but maybe a bit hesitant on each others. Standout performances for me include Don’t Leave Me This Way, Kashmir, Black Dog, and Still of the Night. Slide It In gets honorable mention for its killer transition into Rock-n-Roll (they begin playing the alternate *..ain’t-never-gonna-leave-you...* part, when Carmassi kicks into the opening drums), but Coverdale doesn’t seem quite sure which voice he wants to use on Slide It In -- his stratospherically high voice, or normal voice.

The rest of the band performs solid throughout. I realize these guys were just session musicians, but their professionalism really shines through when listening to these live shows. Denny Carmassi sounds particularly good. Coverdale and Page both owe them all -- Brett Tuggle, Guy Pratt, and Denny Carmassi -- a debt of gratitude.

So, the bottom line on these boots is that if you are dead certain that you want a recording from one of the Coverdale/Page shows, this 4CD set is definitely the one you want to get. The price can be steep (I paid $70 for my copy), but its better than paying $40 for a very mediocre quality recording.
