Countryfile (Sunday 20th January 2008) [PDTV (XviD)]

NATURE: Countryfile
On: BBC 1 North West
Date: Sunday 20th January 2008
Time: 11:00 to 12:00 (1 hour long)

John Craven visits Britain's oldest working mine in Cheshire, which produces rock salt for road use. While there, he also investigates the caverns deep underground where some of our most sensitive data is stored safe from the elements (and prying eyes). Adam Henson discovers the remarkable way the salt mining industry has reshaped the Cheshire landscape, while Ben Fogle is 'Tossing the Sheaf' and 'Hurling the Curling Stone' as he competes in the Scottish Alternative Games.

Cheshire salt mines
One hundred and fifty metres beneath Cheshire, Winsford salt mines produce most of the country's road gritting salt. John Craven visits the rock face, to see how the salt is mined and how it was mined in the past.
The salt industry has left a substantial legacy in the Northwich area. Salt was transported by canals during the industrial revolution and over mining salt has caused dramatic subsidence. Further back in time the Romans first made salt in the region from brine.

Intensive farming
Intensive farming has been associated with dirty, cramped conditions and poor animal welfare. However, as populations rise and available land becomes scarcer, our demand for cheap food fuels the intensive farming industry. Miriam O'Reilly visits two very different pig farms to learn more about intensive production and the possible alternatives.
Pig farmers in the UK have been leading the way in improving pig welfare for the past thirty years, but campaigners think there is still a long way to go for indoor farming systems. While everyone wants to keep on improving, there are still economic and practical hurdles to overcome as well as a constant and increasing customer demand to contend with.

Allotment video diary
Countryfile has sold about 64,000 calendars and the money raised is helping to fund projects like St. Ann's community orchard in Nottingham. The allotments at St Ann's are the oldest and largest in the world, and they give inner-city school pupils the chance to experience a little bit of countryside on their doorsteps.

Goat herding
An increasing number of people are opting for volunteering holidays in the British countryside. One of the most popular working holidays is offered by the National Trust and features goat herding as one of its highlights. Michaela joins a team helping out with the annual roundup of the Isle of Wight's resident goat herd, and discovered that there is more to this traditional activity than yodelling.

Scottish Alternative Games
The Scottish Alternative Games take place in New Galloway each August. Traditional agricultural games are played including: the skilful 'Tossing the Sheaf', the strength requiring 'Hurling the Curling Stone' and the 'Gird and Cleek' world championships that need both speed and skill! Anyone can enter, and winners get a pie.
