Yorkshire - the location of the very first programme. The rest of the team look back at the defining moments of the last

two decades of Countryfile, from BSE to blue tongue, and reveal what the British public think will be the biggest issue

facing the countryside in the next 20 years.

This week Countryfile celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since 1988 the programme has been reporting on the people,

places and stories making news in the British countryside.

Swaledale


The first ever Countryfile was filmed in Swaledale in North Yorkshire. The sweeping river valley is carved out by the

River Swale, but access to the river is an ongoing issue. John Craven heads to Keld on the river bank to revisit a story

which Countryfile reported on two decades ago. Many canoeists think they should have access to rivers just like ramblers

do in the countryside, however, anglers are concerned that their private, and often paid for, retreats will be

overwhelmed.


John also explores an institution which the show has become famous for - the BBC weather forecast. Weatherman Bill

Giles, who presented the first ever Countryfile weather forecast, takes a trip down memory lane.


John gets a surprise when he comes face to face with his dead ringer. Impressionist Jon Culshaw dons the famous red

jacket, Wellington boots and glasses for their first meeting.

Anniversary poll


To mark its anniversary Countryfile commissioned a special poll to find out what the British public think the greatest

issue facing the countryside in the next 20 years will be. Affordable housing came out top, with more than a quarter of

the 2000 people polled choosing it as their main concern.


Miriam O'Reilly reports on why affordable housing has become such a big issue. For over ten years countryside groups

have been raising the issue but nothing has been done. Planning rules and protestors are cited as the main reason, but

could this be about to change? Two new reports both highlight the problem and suggest some solutions.


Homes are in high demand in Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Designer Wayne Hemingway highlights ways

that new housing can benefit rural areas like this, and MP Matthew Taylor explains how he thinks the countryside should

look in the future.

Review of the countryside


The last twenty years have seen a huge change in the countryside and also in the show. The Countryfile team look

back.

1988 - 1992 Countryfile was broadcast for the first time, John Craven joined the team and the photography competition

was launched. Meanwhile, the countryside was ravaged by the effects of BSE.

1993 - 1997 The programme played matchmaker as one of its reporters, Ruth Langsford, was spotted by her now husband

Eammon Holmes. Countryfile played a part in conservation by helping to reintroduce the red kite back to the UK.

1998 - 2002 These years are defined by two countryside marches protesting against the proposed ban on hunting. While

they were ultimately unsuccessful, the events highlighted the discontent felt in the countryside. Then in 2001 the foot

and mouth disease struck, 6 million animals were culled, the outbreak cost the country £6 billion. The show had

the first footage of scenes behind farm gates.

2003 - 2008 It is a momentous period in the show's history as it doubled in length to become an hour long. Events in

the countryside were less favourable though, as farmers had to deal with diseases from bird flu to bluetongue.

The Making of Countryfile


Making 48 programmes a year is a mammoth operation for the Countryfile team. The production crew are based in

Birmingham, and help to seamlessly produce stories from around the country. Ben Fogle takes a look behind the scenes.

The Countryfile presenters swapped their waterproofs for black ties and wellies down on Adam's farm. The special photo

shoot gave the team a welcome chance to catch up and review their time on the show.
