Conquest of Space (1955)

The fourth and final space film in the series produced by George Pal in the early 1950s. Following "Destination Moon," "When Worlds Collide" and "War of the Worlds," Pal set out to depict what man's first journey to Mars might be like. The special effects, hailed as state-of-the-art in their day, look old-fashioned in the digital age and some of the plot creaks, but parts of the film hold up pretty well. Pal was to do "After Worlds Collide" at Paramount following "Conquest" but due to the poor box office for this film, the studio cancelled the project. Pal then moved to MGM where he made "The Time Machine," "Seven Faces of Dr. Lao," "Tom Thumb" and "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm."
