When a band drops into your inbox and the bio states that they are Norwegian, you instantly know that good or bad, what you are about to listen to is never going to be boring. Norway is the country that gave us bands like Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and Burzum. It’s the country with a far different music chart to us folks in the UK, where we get manufactured pop and R n’ B, in Norway you are much more likely to get a top ten filled with Death and Black metal bands. Let’s just say, the musical exports are always a little more ‘extreme’. That is exactly what we get here with the sixth studio album from Combichrist, the genre is Aggrocore the album comes under the uncharacteristic title ‘We Love You’.
Here we have an album that could easily soundtrack the apocalypse. Mixing industrial and something a whole lot heavier, an evil beating heart at it’s core. Album opener ‘We Were Made to Love You’ starts with a spoken word, explaining the decay of modern society what follows is a full on smash to the face of unadulterated anger and electronic beats. Vocalist Andy LaPlegua spitting out his bile drenched vocals with conviction.

It is easy to see why Combichrist have become such a sought after name in the industrial world. This album is just relentless and full of surprises. ‘The Evil In Me’ kind of gives you a breather, with vocals taking a cleaner direction and the beats dropping out for a dark souled piano piece. The break doesn’t last long as you are then hit by the fantastically titled ‘Fuck Unicorns’, which could be a club filler anywhere in the world. For me it’s the stand out track both musically and of course that title is fantastic.

A major strength on this album is that although at times there is a great difference in the dynamics of the tracks, they still compliment each other so well. It would have been easy to just jam 13 pounding, dot by dot industrial numbers together and called it an album. The band though have shown that they have a vast array of ideas and the confidence to present them here. This risk pays off as it opens up like a story. A horror story of course but the beats, bleeps and thunderous metal sounds paint pictures in your head throughout. it’s one of those albums best listened to in an entire block.

All in all Combichrist have stepped up their game here, delivering possibly their strongest album thus far. Maybe just maybe the band were not lying with that album title. This record will be a treat for their fans, maybe they aren’t dead inside, maybe they do love you after all.
