Returning to London from a post in Africa, investigator Harry Sanders is hired by an insurance firm to look into the heavily insured loss of a dredging ship owned by American mining magnate A.J. Magnus. Signing onto the crew of Magnus' replacement vessel, Sanders learns that German-born Captain Janny von Koltze and his crew have been secretly searching for a cache of gold that had been onboard a ship von Koltze sank during World War II.
