In Jest of God, Margaret Laurence writes with grace, power, and deep compassion a "coming of age" story not about a girl, but a woman. Rachel Cameron, school teacher in a small town, despite being 34 years of age, has never had a lover and is, in fact, still a virgin who lives with a controlling mother in a small apartment over a funeral parlour.
Trapped in a milieu of familial deceit and small town pettiness while feeling as useless as the small child her mother manipulates her into emotionally being, Rachel was given no understanding of sex, love, and relationships - any kind of sex is disgusting and any feelings of desire or longing are to be suppressed. While this kind of viewpoint might seem dated, there is nothing at all dated about the novel when one begins to understand exactly how Rachel was brought up to be Rachel. Raising and keeping Rachel to be insecure ensures she feels invisible to everyone but her mother. Keeping Rachel "dependent" on her mother hides the fact that is is the mother who is dependent on Rachel--she judges, harasses, and shames Rachel to take care of every small need she may have. Still, Rachel longs for love, and contact with another human being. Rachel rebels by having her first sexual experience during a summer affair with Nick Kazlik, a schoolmate from earlier years--yet her lack of understanding and distrust of men, sex and desire presents its own problems; in confronting them Rachel grows to become more than the child-woman of her mother's secret garden.
A Jest of God was made into a film directed by Paul Newman and starring Joanne Woodward with the title "Rachel, Rachel".
